Sea sponges are a regenerative renewable resource containing minerals such as zinc, magnesium, potassium, iron, and sodium. Water currents move broken bits of sponge where they settle and multiply by re-growing. Sea sponges are harvested using specially designed cutting hooks or knives. While harvesting, divers leave enough of the base of the sponge to allow for regeneration.
4 reasons why we're cleansing with a sea sponge from now on:
- Natural sea sponges benefit all types of skin, including sensitive skin.
- The texture provides gentle exfoliation and removal of dead skin cells.
- Sea Sponges are naturally hypo-allergenic and toxin free. They contain natural enzymes that blocks the growth of bacteria. This way, with proper care, the sponge can last months even years.
- They are biodegradable. When it's time to replace your sponge, simply toss it in the compost pile.
Choosing a sea sponge:
There are two types of sea sponges. The wool sponges are soft, large and ideal for bath and body. These sponges last the longest. The silk sponges are even softer and are great for facial cleansing and makeup removal.
How to use and clean the sponge:
Add warm water and squeeze out the excess. Apply your cleanser and use the sponge in circular motion. Once the sponge is dry, you can use it to apply a facial masque or gently exfoliate skin. Every two weeks, soak the sponge in a mixture of water and baking soda for a deep clean. Always be gentle with your sponge to ensure longevity.
