Is Your Dish Soap Toxic?

Is Your Dish Soap Toxic?

When thinking of our first sustainable swaps, it's fun to think of new beauty products and sustainable fashion labels, but what about our... dish soap? Conventional dish soap contains potentially significant hazards that could not only cause you harm, but wildlife and the planet as well.

Common ingredients with the highest concerns are Cocamide DEA, DMDM Hydantoin, Ethanolamine, Formaldehyde, Sodium BorateSulfuric Acid, and Triclosan. These ingredients can cause skin irritation, are toxic to aquatic life, are carcinogenic (cancer causing,) and can cause allergies.

The Environmental Working Group EWG (a highly reputable organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment) gave a score of "F" to dish detergent brands: AJAX, Palmolive, Method, Cascade, Dawn, and even products marketed as "eco-friendly" such as Green Works, Method, and The Laundress.

We want to bring you along in our personal journey for sustainability in this new decade. With our new Sustainable Household Collection, we now offer truly eco-friendly dish soaps by women-owned brands No Tox Life and Norfolk Natural Living. The naked dish soap by No Tox Life (which was given a score of "A" by EWG) is only wrapped in a cardboard wrap which is fully recyclable or compostable. The dish soap by Norfolk Natural Living is packaged in 100% recyclable PET plastic and will be refillable at our Bulk Bar coming soon!

Sure dish washing isn't our favorite activity... but we are happy and excited to make educated and healthy choices with the smallest impact on the environment.

Happy dish washing!
